It’s a great question Zac! It points to the fact that schools who bring you in for a 2nd interview do in fact expect you to be constantly improving your profile with more skills, more experience, etc. Firstly, before getting to the interview, you’ll want to make sure that your resume/CV is improved with new additional experiences from your 1st year application to your 2nd year application, that way in the interview, they can see that you have new experiences on the CV itself.

However, even if you haven’t updated your CV, you should be finding new experiences to talk about that you’ve completed or accomplished since last application cycle. Maybe you’ve learned a new skill as a dental assistant or completed a certification in a new technology. Perhaps you did a 1-3 month preceptorship. Perhaps you acted as a research assistant for 2-3 months part time. All of this is the kind of stuff you want to be mentioning in your interview to answer this question.

If you haven’t done anything significant with regard to your profile since last cycle, you’re going to have to at least discuss new things you’ve learned about dentistry since last time around (concrete things). That said, you don’t want to be in this position, you WANT to have some good stuff to talk about, so this is a great reminder to everyone to always be working to add new experiences to your profile throughout the year. Those experiences don’t have to cost you anything- volunteering as a research assistant, for instance, is an amazing experience and doesn’t cost you a dime.
