Occlusal Dovetails are made so that restorations are not easily removed in the proximal direction. For example, in Class II MO preparations, the distal dovetail prevents it from dislodging when a mesial directed force is applied.

The dovetail is longer towards the buccal than towards the lingual. It is not pointed.
